Granted, I don’t feel comfortable going into my favorite coffee shop (Grounded on Jane street) and logging on to my profile and sending out 50 emails while they charge me for every minute. Can you put a price on your love life? Oh wait, that was the three month subsciption I shelled out.
Wicked Charleston Walking Tour (through October 22, 8 p.m.): This 90 minute tour takes a look at the dark side of Charleston: prostitutes, politicians, transvestite killers and gangsters. The tour begins at the Daughters of the Confederacy Building at 188 Meeting St. Tickets are $15. This is easily the best tour of Charleston because it’s not the basic Market, Battery, and Four Corners of the Law behind a smelly horse tour.
Bill was a pretty good pool hustler and one night he talked me into going with him. We went to this little bar called the Red Door Inn. The door was probably red because there was blood all over it.

12 Steps Down was nominated for Best t-shirt country in Philly in 2007 and 2008, and one of the best bars for 2008 by Philadelphia Magazine. There are good reasons for these accolades. A truly diverse and great bottle beer list, made up of both domestics and imports. A nice draft beer menu with a “beer of the week” that varies, although not necessarily weekly as the name suggests (depends on how quickly the keg, or kegs, kick). XM radio set to the New Wave station (this might not be a plus to some people, but it’s what I like to listen to). Knowledgeable bartenders. A cast of regulars.
“I never know what to do with a Queen, Six,” I tell Masterson, who’s sitting next me with an over-grown goatee. “Throw it away!” he quickly says. “Don’t even think about it. Get rid of it.” Gold joins the table and smiles like a proud professor when he sees I’m still in the game.
A hidden gem just northwest of Phoenix, off of the Carefree Highway, State Route 74. A resort hideaway for the rich and famous since 1896, it burned down in 1976, but the springs and some of the buildings remain. In it’s heyday, guests included JFK, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. Google it if you’re up for an adventure.
Before that I had occasion to play pool with my brother, Bill. Not only did he hang out at some of the worst dive bars in St. Louis, he lived upstairs over one. How he put up with the noise and all of the fighting, I’ll never know. It was probably because he was involved in it most of the time.
