This type of gardening can more than pay for itself. And if that is not enough, there are are many profitable opportunities for commercial growing with this kind of system.

This is more or less what we get when we water and fertilize our vegetables in the ground whether we use regular fertilizer, fish heads like my grandfather used to do, or another organic substance like compost. Only with hydroponics, the roots stay in that solution all the time.

If the fish are healthy and well fed, growing plants shouldn’t be a problem. The fish water will supply them with all the nutrients and water they need to grow. Just keep an eye on the leaves and look for any signs of nutrient deficiencies. In some cases you may have to add some supplemental nutrients to the system. But for the most part that is usually not necessary.

With conventional farming, most of the water is wasted by sprinkling or dumping it on the ground. Most of this water evaporates or is lost into the ground, and the plants only get to use a small fraction of it. This problem can be solved with soil free growing. Hydroponics is a way to grow plants directly in water, but it has not caught on as well as some have predicted.

The location of your fish tank or pond if outdoors is vital because if its placed wrong then you could get an algae attack. It is best to keep your fish out of direct sunlight because this is the cause of the algae.

Ok now you have all the things you need to set up your first indoor aquaponics diy system so let’s get some vegetables growing. The first set of pipes go over the grow beds and should have small holes in them to allow water to drip onto the plants. This water then seeps through the media in the grow beds. This water has every single nutriant that your plants need in order to prosper and there is no need for any chemicals, this makes your crop truly organic. The second set of pipes is under the beds and angled downward to allow the filtered water to return to the fish tank, the cycle is then repeated over and over.

Thus, the perfect moment to place the seeds in the pots is when the fish excrement’s have turned into nutrients. The process through which you can obtain nutrients for your plants is quite simple. After you place the fish into the tanks, they will start freeing excrement’s into the water. Because the excrement’s contain ammonia, they are highly toxic for the fish. However, do not worry about that, as this issue is solved by nature itself. There are bacteria which transform the ammonia into nitrites and then into nitrates. In order for your plants to grow you need nitrates, so once the process of decomposing and transforming ammonia is over, the water will be ready to support the plant seeds.

So I’m a fan or organic vegetables, there’s no doubt about that. However what I would like to share is another form of growing your own organics. If you haven’t heard of Aquaponics i’ll give you a brief run down. Aquaponics is a cross between your typical home grown vegetable garden, your fish tank and hydroponics. Essentially you grow your vegetables from the nutrient rich water a tank of fish produces. An Aquaponics system is incredibly easy to set up and maintain, requires only a small amount of space and the benefits… well I’ll list just a few.

This kind of system is ideal for growing plants in deserts. Since the water is given directly to the plants, instead of being dumped on the ground, water loss is minimal. Aquaponics can consume as little as 2% of the water as farming in the ground does. And since no soil is used, this is perfect for ares with poor soil or no soil at all. This has potential to allow many parts of the world to grow food that otherwise would not be able to.

Now the new farming technique of aquaponics is that the waste produced from both hydroponic and aquaculture is actually meeting each other’s food requirement and resulting in the growth of both. So in simple words the waste produced by fish allows different types of vegetables and fruit to grow, and the same way the waste produced by those vegetables and fruits are used to feed the fish to grow or reproduce.
